Sociology
Mrs. Chase

Course Objective:
The primary goal of this class is to increase the students’ awareness of themselves within their relationship with others and understand the society and culture in which we live.
Course Description:
In this course we will examine the basic sociological theories, paradigms and methods of social research. We will use a variety of learning strategies, such as group work, writing, computer work, reading, projects, etc. Some of the topics include: culture, socialization, groups, inequalities, global society, deviance, social class, stratification, institutions, social changes and demography.
Academic Freedom:
To understand relationships we have to study the meanings we place on our interactions with in these relationships. What carries these meanings for us are specific words, gestures, and objects that represent shared meanings between individuals. They are what we call symbols.
Some of these symbols have offensive meanings that must be discussed and shown in class by the instructor. This is done in order for the class to study their use and effects on human interaction. If offensive symbols used in class for academic purpose create a for you as a student, please talk to me (Chase) in advance, if possible.
Course Materials:
Organization and good study skills will also be emphasized in the class. As such, students will be required to maintain a portfolio that is to be used in Sociology only. It will be collected at the end of each marking period for a test grade. Your portfolio must consist of the following:
-
-
a 2’ 3 ring binder
-
at least 5 dividers
-
current events logs (will be provided)
-
adequate supply of pens and #2 pencils
-
markers or colored pencils
-
You are required to bring your portfolio and textbook to class everyday. Your portfolio supplies are due by_____________.
Make sure you are working on this all marking period to keep it up!!!!
Attendance:
Attendance on a regular basis is a critical part of any course. As such, repeated tardies and absenteeism in this class are unacceptable. School policy on tardies and absenteeism will be followed. In addition, tardies and unexcused absences will have a dramatic impact on the participation portion of your grade. It is your responsibility to check the "Sociology Assignment File” following an absence and to obtain missed class notes and current event from a classmate.
Late and make up work:
Make up work and test/quizzes will only be accepted for excused absences.
You have the exact number of days you were absent to turn in your make up work.
There is NO late work accepted!!!!
The only exception to this would be “AMNESTY DAY”. There will be 3 unannounced Amnesty Days per quarter; your late assignments must be ready to hand in immediately when announced. If you don’t use your passes they will be collected for extra credit at the end of the marking period. There is NO Amnesty for current events and other announced assignments!!!!
Cell Phones:
There is a zero tolerance policy on cell phones. If I see them they will be taken and given to the office. There is no purpose for them in class and they will not be allowed!
Grading:
Your grade will be determined by a combination of class and homework assignments, portfolio grades, current event presentations, projects, oral presentations and written assignments, group and teamwork, class participation and quizzes and tests. A point system is used. Each quarter is worth 40% and the finals are worth 20% each.
A……….100-93%
A-………92-90%
B+………89-87%
B………..86-83%
B-……….82-80%
C+………79-77%
C………..76-73%
C-……….72-70%
You get the idea!
Test and quizzes
You will always receive at least a week’s notice and a review for all tests. You will not always receive notice on a quiz though. You will receive a review and the class will play “Jeopardy” for review with a chance for extra credit toward the test. You will be responsible for anything that has been discussed, handed out in class and in the assigned readings during the unit. Current event quizzes will be given once a marking period.
Class Participation:
Each student will be assigned a class participation grade to be factored into your total points for the marking period. Participation will be 30 points for each marking period. Class participation grades will include the following:
-
-
bringing materials to class (be prepared for spot checks)
-
tardies and unexcused absences
-
readiness for class (bathroom, hall and locker passes)
-
I will keep a schedule of events on www.apgopo-chase.tripod.com. I will have upcoming assignments, projects and tests as well as pop quizzes that will not be announced in class. You can also email me via this WebPage if you are absence or need a question answered.
Extra Credit:
Extra credit will only be apart of projects or assignments. Any student that has completed and turned in all of their work but demonstrates a genuine need for additional extra credit may see me.
Let’s have a great semester!!!!!
